Thing 6: Digital Security

Before we opened we were determined to make our home as digitally accessible as possible, offering not just free WiFi but also making sure our TV's were smart TV's so we could offer a wider range of viewing such as live concerts, movies, exercise videos and stream our own photos and videos. So we had a company come in and install a server to handle multiple sites and installed 'Hotspots' throughout the home to stretch the WiFi signal.

We use a company for online training for the staff, all staff have their own passwords and log ins and we encourage them to use the system both at home and at work of they need to get training done or even just an update.  It is a safe and secure system so we know there is no risk when they use it at home as they are only accessing their own portfolios.  I can log on remotely as a manager and check everyone's progress which is a great help for planning the training as the year goes on.

Thankfully, we are reasonably tech savvy here so we knew that security of the system was paramount and that our knowledge of it may not be enough so we arranged for the IT company, who installed the system, to maintain it on a contract basis.   How it works is that the IT company can monitor the router and all of the hotspots remotely and if there is any suspicious activity they can deal with it immediately and report directly to us if there is anything else we need to do.  The system can be specific as we have different WiFi spots for staff use and guest use so they can let us know where the problem lies and which device is causing it.  We have an office policy where our passwords are changed every 6 months.

One of our biggest risk areas is using online shopping.  It is a very convenient and fast service and we use a dedicated bank card to buy items.  To stay safe, we only use reputable companies like amazon and argos.  We also have most of our supplier accounts online where we can place orders for food, chemical and stationary supplies.  The cards are never stored so only authorised staff have access to this and we have never had any problems with it so far.
