Thing 4: Digital Footprint

Now this one is a big old grey area.  Here we have employee responsibilities Vs. Human Rights. We have to define what is and is not acceptable.  Freedom of speech is as much a part of the online world as it is offline but where do we draw the line?  How far would we allow employees to go before we say enough is enough?  Welcome to digital.

Take my work for example, we are hugely advocating staff going digital, we have a new digital care management system, we have Alexa devices for information and playing music, we have Alexa enabled televisions, digital doorbells, digital ordering and plans for so much more, BUT, we don't allow staff to use their personal phones during work hours. So we combat this by buying tablets to let them run the apps, this way we have better control over their access.

Similarly, with our Social Media sites, it's only management who can post on them but we encourage staff to send us things to post like activity pictures and videos or links to relevant articles.

We have Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter pages, we have signed consents from all residents to display pictures and videos and we post updates on special events and sometimes just show off, like the time we had the Virtual Dementia Tour bus in for training staff or the Therapy Ponies for the residents (ok, staff as well).  A proud achievement is our profile on the website carehome.co.uk where we are the number one rated home in Scotland (huge achievement considering we have only been open for just over a year).  In terms of our Digital Footprint, we are a relatively new home so don't feature too prominently on a google search of 'residential care homes in glasgow' but that's where our word of mouth reputation kicks in and we have been luck enough to have full occupancy for the majority of time we have been open and we do get a large photo link page if you try 'abbey court glasgow'.

Technology in care homes is getting better and more accessible all the time, we feel we have a great staff team who know how to conduct themselves and are certainly mindful of our policies on social media, the Health & Social Care Standards and the SSSC Codes of Conduct. Staff know they can keep their own personal pages private so as not to disrepute the home.
